Abstract and Bio for Dr. Michael Dong, Thursday October 19, 2006
"MS-compatible HPLC Method Development for Pharmaceutics:
trends, best practices and case studies:"
Michael W. Dong, Synomics Pharmaceutical Services
This seminar focuses on modern trends and best practices in HPLC method development for drug substances and drug products. Several case studies will be presented to illustrate the strategies and decision process for developing HPLC methods for regulated assays and for method improvement from HPLC to Fast LC and Ultra-high-pressure LC (UHPLC).
- Review modern strategies and trends for HPLC method development
- Phase-appropriate method development and validation
- Method optimization and fine-tuning to meet ICH reporting guidelines
- Case studies: drug substances, OTC/combinational drug products and complex formulations
- Method improvements from HPLC to Fast LC and UHPLC

Bio for Dr. M.W. Dong
Dr. Michael W. Dong is a Research Director at Synomics Pharmaceutical Services at Wareham, MA, responsible for chromatography method development/validation and conducting clients’ research projects. His research interests are Fast LC, UHPLC and methodologies for genotoxic impurities and complex formulations. Formerly, he was a Research Fellow/Group Leader at Purdue Pharma, a Senior Staff Scientist at Perkin-Elmer, and a section-head in Hoechst Celanese. He holds a B.Sc. in Chemistry from Brooklyn College and a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from City University of New York. He has conducted numerous HPLC training courses at national meetings on advanced HPLC, Fast LC and HPLC method development. He pioneered Fast LC and has over 80 publications in chromatography and analytical chemistry. He authored “Modern HPLC for Practicing Scientists,” Wiley, (June) 2006 and co-edited “Handbook of Pharmaceutical Analysis by HPLC” published by Elsevier/Academic Press, 2005. He is a long-term member of Toastmasters International.
